Thank you for sharing your story. I'll be linking to it all over. Please keep me in mind for helping to pass around these stories. I'd be happy to help in any way. Also, for those interested, I went to a panel over the summer at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando. Ashley Eckstein hosted the panel about bullying and a new book by Carrie Goldman called Bullied. It is REALLY good. Being someone who has read everything on the topic by now, I was surprised to find fresh concepts in its pages!

I wrote a post, months ago, about bullying. I tried to put it in a broader perspective.

What do bullying, Winston Churchill and a fictional gay prince have in common?

Books as an escape. Yeah, I've been there.

This was a very brave post. Thank you for sharing your story, and for being so candid.

You're not alone.

I really like you bullet-ed list at the end of the post. Great thoughts, Jaye.

I’m very proud to be a part of this important event, and empowered by all the stories of hope and encouragement I’m reading today. It’s wonderful that people can get together and promote the positive.

Jaye, thank you for sharing this. I know it couldn't have been easy for you. The nicknames, the hurtful things said, and the torment the bullies gave are all things that never leave us. I really like your points on how to deal with bullying. Thank you!

Wow. Your story was like a punch to the stomach. Knocked the air right out of me. Bravo for standing up to those kids. One of the few things I'd change about my life in the vast number of mistakes I've made is all the times I didn't stand up for some other kid being bullied. It's a crappy thing to pick on someone like that and although I didn't really participate, I didn't protect the girls who were teased so mercilessly. At the time I didn't think I had the power to change the behavior of the other kids, but as an adult, I've always thought just maybe I could have.

I was too tall, too skinny, to smart, too whatever. Haters are going to hate. I was never one of the cool kids so I was bullied on occasion at school but it was nothing compared to the bullying I got at home.
I think my kids had it worse at school as some of the social filters we had as kids have eroded to the point of non-existence. In some ways it is better. There is more information out there and role models are speaking up and out against bullies. More needs to be done at home, in schools and in the media.
My daughter is Jewish and a lesbian living in the bible-belt. How she has grown into the incredible woman she has despite all the negativity is one of life's great mysteries and one of my greatest blessings.
I think blogging about this is a good thing. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thanks so much for sharing this Jaye. It's heartbreaking to hear the torment you endured. I agree so much that you "endured" school and didn't "attend". Only people who were bullied will understand that.
