Hey, kids. I’m working on revisions of the secret project (I hope to announce it soon!) today, so we’re going to watch a movie instead of me doing  along post berating you for doubting yourself.

A while back I saw a documentary that followed The White Stripes on Tour, called UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS. The entire thing is worth a watch, especially if your’e a fan of the band (which I am). But this segment below stuck with me because it speaks directly to the creative process and applies to almost any art form. Enjoy!

  1. Jaye,if you like this bit you should watch “It Might Get Loud” wherein Jack White,Jimmy Page, and The Edge talk about what inspires them. It is mostly about guitars and music, but there is a lot in there that can be applied to any creative endeavor.

  5. It’s very inspiring to be able to watch other artists creating and discussing their approach to the art they create no matter what the form of expression happens to be.

  7. Agreed, Especially ones like those three who have such established and distinctive individual voices. I’m fascinated by what makes creativity tick. Have you read IMAGINE By Jonah Lehrer? It’s the best book ont he topic I’ve read.

  9. This is exactly one of the reasons that I love working in live theatre and dance. The deadlines never go away and very, very rarely get moved. Opening night is opening night and you had better have your work done by then…because there is no other choice. That pressure coupled with the expectations of all the other artists involved has made up my entire design career in theatre. It’s also the problem I face with writing. Without some sort of externally imposed deadline I…meander is the kindest way to phrase it. I gotta get into a writers group again. So far that has served me best of all when it comes to creating some sort of deadline experience. I am always comforted by hearing these other artists talk about work of art, because I have always found creativity in the pressure cooker of just having to do the work NOW.
